I last awarded CCs 10 years ago and during that 10 years there have been quite a few changes to the breed. Presentation and handling are very good. But sadly, in the lower classes, there is a worrying absence of basic breed type. Alien expressions, short ribs, upright shoulders, narrow heads which follow through to narrow bodies, incorrect stilted rear action, and some with paddling in front Thankfully in the top classes the breed is strong. I was more than delighted with my top winners, beautiful heads typical balance, really lovely movement, and all had that essential “essence of a Shih Tzu”. |

A pleasure to judge this wonderful breed at the Shih Tzu Club of South Wales & Western Counties. This hard working committee ran a very pleasant efficient show and my thanks to them. My two stewards were very helpful and ran the ring very smoothly. Thank you to all the exhibitors for bringing their dogs for me to judge, a lovely entry and some very good dogs to go over. On the down side I was surprised to see a few wry jaws…. is this is a new fault creeping into the breed? Short ribs with long loin still persist and some uncharacteristic expressions can be found. In spite of this I was delighted with my winners and some very good dogs went down the line |
