My thanks to the officers and committee of the Shih Tzu Club for inviting me to judge their October Championship Show, and for their hospitality and help of the appointed steward. Many thanks to those who entered and not only entered but travelled through storm Callum. You are all intrepid and your dedication to showing your dogs is to be admired. Because I would rather look at Breed positives, I have to say I found reflections of good dogs of the past in several exhibits. Every breed inevitably evolves through the generations either by assistance or by nature, but importantly as a breed evolves the attributes that make it what it is must be kept intact and recognizable, so that if a dog from the past entered the ring it would not look out of place. Grooming is only the finishing touch, not the dog. Points to carefully consider – do watch your dogs moving both ways, look for the characteristic ’full-pad-showing kick’, close movement or a shuffling gait spoils many an otherwise good exhibit. Nostrils should be open with nose of good proportion to the dog, not overly short. Eyes: Oval or almond shape are incorrect. Width and depth of rib in some exhibits were a little lacking. But I was delighted with my line-ups and winners.

It was a huge pleasure, honour and delight to be invited to judge the breed I love. Numerically Bitches are still stronger in breed type and quality than Dogs. However the dogs I placed were all good representatives of the breed and deserved their places and wins. Although not a mouth judge I felt there was great improvement in width of jaw and dentition. Some close movement behind spoilt some otherwise nice exhibits, do watch your dogs move away from you. The great delight is seeing a class enter the ring and knowing it will present a challenge to judge for all the right reasons and I was fortunate to have several of those. Thank you all for allowing me to judge your beloved dogs.

I was privileged to have some nice dogs to judge, presented in clean and tidy condition. Hind movement seems to be becoming a problem, single tracking is present in otherwise beautiful dogs - a great pity for them and a worry for the breed in general if it continues unabated. If attention is paid to this now with care it can surely be bred out, don’t let this blight the breed. As ever the breed standard must be the guide in all things. Clean, driving hind movement with two feet showing full pad is what is required. We need to look at our own dogs with constructive criticism. Having said that there was much to like among the entries, which was very pleasing.

A wonderful entry for my first ticket appointment, thank you to all Exhibitors for their entries and to the Committee of NCST Club for their kind invitation to judge their well run and enjoyable Championship Show. It all appeared to work seamlessly. Observations - Some eyes are too small and almond shape which is wrong for the breed. Hind movement is a problem in a few dogs, they should not single track and a few showed no pad going away at all. The breed calls for a sturdy dog and while it doesnt mean they have to be as wide as they are high it does mean not light of bone and/or narrow. The breed needs to guard against losing bone for if it does it will never get it back. However, my winning exhibits were of good breed type and quality and in a couple of classes there were some good dogs who were card-less on the day.
