I was honored and thrilled to be invited to judge my first breed the wonderful Shih-Tzu at Paignton & DFA. I fell in love with Shih-Tzu in 1980 and have had them in my life ever since. My late husband Peter Wegmann not a fan of dog shows but became a true Shih-Tzu nut saying how kind their natures and irresistible faces captured him, this was amazing from a Swiss man who had been an Army Officer, a NH Jump Jockey and liked Dobermanns! The endearing Shih-Tzu is capable of melting any heart. All of the dogs yesterday even ones who might have been a tad shy were kind and approachable. Lots of hard work went into the super presentation, thank you exhibitors for this treat, also thank you for taking my decisions with good grace and being so sporting. Lots of applause around the ring, and my Best of Breed Dog’s owner told me she had lots of support from Shih-Tzu people in the Group and how lovely that made her feel, we are not a bad lot really. I noticed some of the forefaces were not quite so wide as I would have liked, a few jumbled mouths but not many. Most exhibits had beautiful underjaws with clear dentition. Plenty of substance and bone, many wonderful big feet, clear round eyes a true delight to see all this. On the downside there were a few flat tails, breeders please watch out this doesn’t become too common. But on the whole, I’d say you’re doing a good job. |

Thank you to the Officers and Committee of The Shih Tzu Club of South Wales & Western Counties for giving me the honour to be invited to judge at our Club Championship Show today. Especially to the Secretary Mrs Tracey Hitt, Show Manager Mr Michael Hitt and to my Steward Mr Shaun Matthews who both worked tirelessly throughout the show. I found that eyes and noses on the whole were improved with adherence to the breed standard, lovely to see many slightly undershot jaws which give that breedy Shih Tzu foreface, so many well placed ears and level toplines. Not much variance in size either, the majority of exhibits and all of my 1st placings were of the correct size for their age. There were a few flattish tails but on the whole more were high set t/pot style. None of my 1st placed dogs were over weight but there were a few dogs carrying more width of girth than necessary. Presentation of coats has stepped up a lot. Note to handlers of heavily coated dogs please be aware that heavy coats impede movement and impede the judges vision, I want to see rear pads clearly. Sensible trimming to keep dogs free flowing is advised. The vast majority of dogs were immaculate, clean and knot free. No sign of ulcers or slipping patella in any dog today. Pleased to report all exhibits in good health and more importantly much loved by their handlers. |

It was my great honour and privilege to judge my specialist Shih-Tzu today. Since my last judging them in the UK in 2013 I am pleased to report that breeders on the whole are getting breed character plus temperament right. I found no evidence of horseshoe jaws or overshot, many pleasing line ups of higher tails along with dogs who are moving correctly with reach and drive. Showmanship and presentation has improved over the years, the dedication and hard work of breeders and exhibitors was apparent to me in many of the dogs today. Thank you to the Three Counties for the invitation and thank you to the exhibitors for your entries. |

Since I last judged I note that the younger dogs have improved dentition especially on lower jaw, colours are deeper and presentation is becoming more elaborate. There are definately fewer of the coarser heads and a prettier more elegant look is emerging. The downside was that there are a few who lack substance and rib. Pleased to note that on the whole soundness and movement good within the breed |

Just about 2 years since I last judged the breed at this level. Found more variance in head types, some uneven toplines & faulty mouths i.e. narrow jaws & missing teeth. Dismayed to see dogs "strung up" & overdosed with white powder! Overall quality, balance, substance & coat textures improved. Had lots of fun in MPB as virtually every naughty girl wanted to make an exhibition of themselves! Despite humid day most Shih-Tzu (& owners) carried themselves well. |

It was a great thrill and honour to be invited to judge Shih- Tzus for the first time at this level, thank you. My day did not start well due to heavy traffic and road closures on my ill chosen route! My apologies for starting a few minutes late. It was a fascinating experience to have so many of the breed together and tough at times to send out some quality exhibits cardless. Critically there were some horseshoe jaws, untypical fluffy coats, and some dogs lacked substance, however I was pleased to note the overall standard of exhibit was high with definite typical expressions and soundness. Presentation was also of the highest standard with the majority of you. I was delighted with my winners and doubly so when the BOB was Utility Group 2 and the BP was Group 4 |
