50TH CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW: I would like to thank the Officers and Committee for the invite to judge this landmark show, I went to the clubs first Ch show and exhibited at the second one, so my long association with the Manchu I considered it a great honour to be asked to judge, its one of my high points in the breed. A good entry awaited me but I must say a very mixed bag, some excellent heads one of the main points of a Shih Tzu; mouths were good on the whole, tendency to do the topknot too high which gives the appearance of staring rather than a soft look, some need more body, still a few with swan necks and when standing the profile is out of balance, two major problems, first one, coming and going, some showed no pads behind and elbows out coming. The second one is muscles in the hindquarters, they are like jelly, they need to be firm and that will help with the hind movement, we are a breed that worries about coat, first it should be construction and fit for function under the coat, please exercise these dogs more. Saying all of this, I enjoyed my day immensely. |

Thank you to Paignton for the invite to judge my own breed and to the exhibitors for making the long journey, the weather was glorious a shade warm for the dogs. A few general remarks over my 40 years in this breed I have had the privilege to have my hands on some of the greater dogs in the breed. I found the dogs quite poor overall, poor movement and poor bodies with no spring of rib. Many slab sided dogs. As usual the bitches were far better than the dogs. 4 years ago I mentioned flat tails and to your credit not one this time. Very nice tea pot tail this time. Correcting faults is hard but with careful planning it can be done. I also found some pinched nostrils, mouths I do think they are getting better it is a slow job. More dogs than bitches lacked strong rear action so failed to show pads. Please remember you are only as good as your bitches |
