Firstly, I should like to thank the Commitee and Officers of Border Union Agricultural Society for inviting me to judge Shih Tzu at this years show. I was honoured that so many of my entry had travelled long distances to support me. I should like to thank all the exhibitors for allowing me the privilege of judging their dogs. My entry was not huge in number, but this was far exceeded by the quality of exhibits throughout the entry. I would also like to thank my stewards who did a great job of keeping the judging going and for keeping the paperwork in order. This is my opinion of my findings on the day. I found that the quality of both dogs and bitches to be about the same, though the bitch entry was slightly larger. Last time I judged I did find some exhibits with small, not round eyes. Today I didn’t find any. I am pleased to say that I did find what I was looking for in all classes. Some classes were challenging in that all the exhibits had the qualities I was looking for. I was very pleased with both of my Challenge Certificate winners, likewise both of my Reserve Challenge Certificate winners. Also, my Best Puppy in Breed and Best Veteran in Breed. |

I should like to thank the Officers and Committee of Driffield Agricultural Society for kindly inviting me to judge. Unfortunately, the weather was not kind to us this year. It took a lot of hard work and dedication from the organisers to allow the show to proceed; so, thank you ever so much.Since I last judged in 2014, I found that rib cages seemed to have improved, last time I found several exhibits with very narrow rib cages. I did however, still find some exhibits that did not have the correct eye shape and/or were too close together giving a snipey appearance. I did find a few exhibits, lacking in rear angulation which affected their movement. However, I was pleased with my winners and thought that my line up illustrated what I was looking for. Thank you to my two stewards for their help in keeping the judging flowing so easily. Thank you to the exhibitors for my lovely entry and their intrepidness in managing the conditions to bring their dogs for me to judge. I felt very honored. When I judge; I am looking for a well-balanced dog, who is longer than tall, well angulated front and rear, with a deep broad rib cage extending well down the body. I look for a large well-shaped skull, with a short muzzle and definite stop. Large, round, dark eyes well-spaced apart. Dentition is important as correct dentition can enhance the expression, conversely incorrect dentition can mar the expression. Having said that; if a dog’s other attributes are desirable, dentition need not be the be all. I like, free movement, extending well in front and driving well from behind. Coat is the icing on the cake, completing the overall picture. With my entry on the day I was very pleased to find what I was looking for in both the dogs and the bitches. I have read in other people’s critiques that they found the bitches to be much stronger than the dogs. I found both sexes to be fairly equal in quality. |
Scottish KC (August) 2014 | Date : 24th August 2014

I would like to thank the Officers and Committee of The Scottish Kennel Club for their kind invitation to judge and my stewards for their help in keeping the judging going. I am extremely grateful for my lovely entry especially in these days of falling entries generally. I am honoured that many travelled far to support me. I was very pleased with both my dog and bitch line ups, which I feel showed what I am looking for in a Shih Tzu. I was highly delighted with both my CC and RCC winners. I thought that the overall quality of my entry was good. However, I was concerned to see that there is still an issue of small eyes spoiling the typical Shih Tzu expression. I found that loose from assembly and upright shoulders was also still an issue leading to stilted front movement. I was concerned that some exhibits had very small heads with flat faces, lacking the cushioning so important to giving a correct expression. Dentition in some was also an issue. However, I did find that many exhibits had better rear angulation than when I last judged. |
Blackpool 2012 | Date : 22nd June 2012

I would like to thank the Officers and Committee of Blackpool & District Canine Society for their kind invitation to judge and my Stewards for their help and hard work under difficult conditions. I thank the exhibitors for the lovely quality entry on this my first occasion of awarding Challenge Certificates. The weather did its level best to spoil the day, thankfully it did not and I had a most enjoyable time. I am exceedingly grateful to the exhibitors for travelling in such foul weather and for their continued patience and good humour throughout the day. I feel privileged that so many allowed me to judge their dogs in the less than ideal conditions. I was very pleased with both my dog and bitch line ups and highly delighted with my CC and RCC winners. Observations: I felt that the overall entry was good quality. However, I was concerned to find some small eyes that were not round spoiling the typical expression; lack of rear angulation leading to poor hind movement; some with loose front assembly affecting front movement and some narrow, short ribcages. |
