Thank you to the Officers and Committee for the kind invitation to Judge my own breed this year at East of England Showground. Grateful thanks also to my lovely stewards for keeping everything moving efficiently. They contributed highly to a very enjoyable day for the exhibitors. My admiration goes to all the exhibitors who gave their best in what was one of the hottest days of the year. The little dogs coped very well with the heat and I am happy to say breathing only affected a couple of the exhibits. My thoughts about the breed as a whole, as a result of my judging on the day, was that we have still some way to go to get the all-important good angulation on fronts. I was pleased that many had the prominent fore chest and well-let down giving good width. However, this like all good things too much becomes a fault and so some were out at elbow and had short upper arm. Forward movement did not always display the reach that gives a balanced outline in fact a few struggled to move without rocking. Rear angulation was better on most of the exhibits which of course is the driving force and how the dog starts its movement. To be powerful needs muscle and I was sad to note that quite a lot did not have the nice round thigh that surely is needed to drive them on. Some very close behind which is so incorrect for movement. I was pleased to see that width of jaw has improved somewhat which helps the dentition, although there is still thought needed when selecting to improve this in the breeding plan. |

My first CC appointment was so wonderful from beginning to end and for which I thank Mr Martin Freeman, Hon. Secty. and his Committee for believing in me and sticking with me for the two years for until my appointment was approved. Such a hard working and supportive Committee and a show in a lovely setting. Thank you to all those who entrusted me with their lovely dogs, many of which really put me to the test with such high quality. Overall I found good construction and movement with many well balanced exhibits, even though there was a real mix of type. Topline and tailset I found with those present had improved and depth, spring and length of rib also improving. For me for the future width of skull, lower jaw, muzzle and dentition needs monitoring as some exhibits did not have that round head with padding over the muzzle and enough width in the lower jaw for teeth to lay straight. Eye conformation also in some was small and more oval than round which detracts from the requirements of our Standard and the open features and melting expression one seeks. I feel very fortunate in finding my special dogs for top awards, but also frustrated that some very worthy exhibits went without even though they would have fitted the wording on the CC. So here are my critiques: |
