Full Critique for Manchu Shih Tzu Society 2022

This critique reflects the judge's opinion
based on what they saw on the day of the show.
| Many thanks to the Manchu Committee for the invitation to judge and the kind hospitality given to myself, Vicky and Jenny. A big thank you to my very efficient stewards Grant and Fiona who looked after me so well also many thanks to all the exhibitors for their entries I enjoyed my day, but was very disappointed with the majority of the dogs. 6 years ago when I judged I said that movement still needs working on, if it wasn’t addressed soon up and coming judges will never see the correct movement of our lovely breed and it will be gone forevermore, it has not improved. Generalizing in my opinion a lot of the dogs had poor front extension were moving close behind lacking rear drive this is not the Shih Tzu movement to be aiming for. Heads are getting smaller, noses are getting longer losing the tip up, some exhibits lacked under jaw. On the plus side dentition has improved. For me a lot of the dogs were too large, too heavy, and high on the leg. I had to compromise. I always judge attributes conforming to the breed standard and not fault judge, on the day it was difficult to find dogs conforming. My winners pleased me, and I hope I’ve pleased some of you, my judging reflected what I saw with the exhibits on the day, but this is only my opinion. Some dogs were reluctant to stand on the table comfortably and were reluctant to move enthusiastically, it could be lack of dog training not possible during Covid or socialising but it’s not Shih Tzu temperament as I know it. On the plus side all of the dogs were clean, well groomed and well-loved. ChB class: Howard’s Ch Tameron Miss Black Opium Stood alone but what a picture. She had a soft oriental expression with a darkest of eyes they looked right into mine full of expression saying look at me, look no further. This head was what I was looking for, wide spaced dark appealing eyes tip tilted nose, good mouth and jaw line. A lovely arched neck onto a level back good set tail, good depth and length of rib. Strong quarters well angulated help to power her round the ring in true Shih Tzu style not putting a foot wrong. Beautifully presented full of quality. Pleased to award her the CC and Best of Breed. Later I learnt this gave her the breed record. ChD Class:1) Hey-Cheshire’ss CH Shalehan Yasheron This dog was a nice size for me and fitted the standard requirements. He had a pleasing head, strong couplings and was nicely balanced. Pleasant outline held well standing and moving. In good jacket. 2) Flack’s CH Mifcah’s The King And I JW Another nice dog who move well and was nicely balance. | 1st | Peekin Jazz-A-Matazz-Tu | Nice head on this puppy, mischievous dark eyes, good arch to the neck onto a level top line. Correct tail set firm body well-constructed coming along nicely. Good furnishings to the head and the body well groomed. Moved well holding his balance. |

He was a nice shape more Shih Tzu to me in shape and size. Nice head with a Oriental expression gave him the edge. Really well handled he sailed round the ring. |

| 2nd | Shirkeira Ragamuffin At Middletune | Unlucky to meet 1 on this occasion. This boy also had a nice head and mouth, a good body and outline, just preferred the movement on the 1st. Beautifully presented as always from this kennel. |

| 1st | Keytor The Jazz Singer | Well balanced boy strong body firm ribs of good length, nicely arched neck, level topline and correct tail set. Pleasing head nice dark eyes, wide jaw a balanced outline standing and moving lovely presentation as always from this kennel. One of the better movers. |
| 2nd | Shihmali Solar Flare | Nice honest dog the size that fits the standard. Pleasing head with lovely dark eyes, nice nose placement with a good wide jaw. In good jacket well presented. |

Ashmakin Bodacious Smooth for JaxTzu JW ShCM ShCEX | This young man was just the right size for me when I first looked at him he had the typical arrogant look that Shih Tzu’s used to have, He has an Oriental expression with the darkest of eyes, tip tilted nose and wide jaw fitting the breed standard. He has a good arch and length of neck which was lacking in a few exhibits today, a level top line and firm shoulders lovely balanced head to tail giving a super outline held well standing and on the move without assistance. His movement was strong and flowing driving from the rear he never put a foot wrong and his handler showed him to perfection. Beautifully groomed and presented, I was pleased to award him the CC. Later I learnt that this was his third CC making him a worthy champion. |
| 2nd | Middletune Wildest Charmer | Unlucky to meet one in such good form. This boy was just the right size again for me. Nice head with nice dark eyes preferred the expression of 1. Good quarters nicely muscled, level back, pleasing head to tail balance giving a nice outline. Moved with drive, beautifully groomed and well handled. |

| 1st | Ch. Keytor All That Jazz | Love this boy but he wasn’t giving his best in the challenge. But he is a pensioner like me and allowed to slow up. His dark eyes melt your heartstrings as I wrote in my critique when I gave him a CC. Coat presentation is first class he looked a picture. A worthy champion he deserved to be Best Veteran in Show. |

| 1st | Ashmakin Red Is The Rose At Jaxtzu (IKC) JW | The head I liked very feminine with that aloof look but with melting eyes. The size and height I like, nicely balanced with a high tail. Well bodied, moved well, lovely presentation. |

| 1st | Ch. Paliden Bucks Fizz To Ekland JW | This lady had an Oriental look plus the arrogance that showed in her face made it impossible not to look at her. Lovely balance nice arch to the neck level top line, high tail set and the right size for me. Strong quarters and good angulation showed in her strong movement, she sailed round the ring effortlessly. Lovely groomed coat finished the picture. In contention for top honours, pleased to award her reserve CC. |

| 1st | Ch. Taydale Dancin In The Stars with Cedarhythe | Very outgoing young lady hard to believe she is a veteran. Her head was correct to the standard lovely dark eyes good width of jaw, tip to the nose. Her body was strong well muscled and nice to go over. She was however a little reluctant with her tail positions today but her strong movements confirmed her first place. In good jacket well presented. |
