Thanks Rose - the 2006 highlights were great, and I'm looking forward to watching the 2007 video available from next week.

Wonder what the KC would make of those topknots? Do you think they use invisible hairspray in those topknots?!?! <img src='http://www.shihtzuclub.co.uk/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/lmao.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lmao:' />

I wonder if it would pass a coat test <img src='http://www.shihtzuclub.co.uk/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src='http://www.shihtzuclub.co.uk/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> It would be nice if Crufts could do this, even if it was only for the line ups for the tickets.

Interesting seeing some of the front movement on some. <img src='http://www.shihtzuclub.co.uk/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

Believe me -- there's nothing "invisible" about the hairspray, mousse, or the fake eye stripes! Over here, it appears that nothing is said about this unless another exhibitor complains. There's talk every now and then on some of the boards about the topknots and how they've really gotten out of hand here in the U.S. I personally think they detract from the good looks of this wonderful breed, but when in Rome.... Stevie, the black that took BOB, is, from all things I've read, a really exquisite dog -- very rare for a solid of any color, and especially a black, to take a win like that. Thanks for posting the link, Rose!

I must admit the topknots are just a bit too exaggerated now. It detracts from the balance of the shih tzu - with the head and the tail meant to be similar in height.

I thought Stevie was one of the best balanced dogs there.

John - yes, its a shame that the Kennel Club won't film some of our breed classes/or even the challenge lineup - and even more of a shame that when someone else tries to do it, the Kennel Club stops them!

Westminster Show.....video - DebJon - 02-15-2007

I must admit that Stevie was the one that we picked out, but it is a little difficult to see his movement because of his colour

As for the filming it's nice that it's free access to all ,and because it's been provided by an independent source then they can't be blamed for any bias.

I suppose if the KC undertook the same project, they would charge to access the on-line clips? old meanies!! John

Westminster Show.....video - Adam - 02-15-2007

The KC told me last year that they were aware of the demand but they didn't see how they could get around the whole show to film it professionally.

Would be good if they did but the costs involved in doing it would almost certainly never be recouped if they did it at breed level. If they made a hour long production of the Utility group (for example) it might just be viable assuming breed fanciers were happy to watch all the other breeds in the group as well.

Westminster Show.....video - Kengai - 02-15-2007

I wonder what the KC would say about filming and putting together a DVD from a Breed Club Championship show? It wouldn't cover as many dogs as there are at Crufts, but it would probably still provide a good keepsake for some keen shih tzu people.

I agree, but when the tail is lying flat on the back, there isn't much chance of balance between the head and the tail to begin with! LOL! Which reminds me of a question I've been meaning to ask of this group. What do you mean by "tail set" in the U.K.? To me, it means how the tail is set on to the croup plus how it is held above the back. A few months ago, I saw a pic of a U.S. bitch that was quite lovely, but her tail wasn't held high -- rather it rested on her back. Several people commented that she had such a lovely tail set. One breeder here told me that my definition of tail set was incorrect. That tail set merely means how the tail is attached to the body and has nothing to do with the way it's carried. Not trying to cause trouble, just trying to learn!

I must admit Janet, I thought many of the tails at Westminster were much too flat - but didn't want to offend any of our american members! It's a real shame because the shih tzu is all about that beautiful balance. Although I would say that the grooming of the american shih tzu is absolutely amazing - once you can see past the top knot!

My understanding of tail set is where the tail is attached to the body - there are some tails which are too far down the end of the back, which means it comes "out" the back of the body before it comes over - which looks a bit odd (and sometimes it can make the topline look strange).

I may be wrong - perhaps some of our more experienced exhibitors could advise?

Westminster Show.....video - Tam and Taffie - 02-15-2007

A brilliant video, and yes a huge shame we cannot have a similar DVD by the KC of Crufts, but then again can you imagine the can of worms being opened by exhibitors if they did not give permission for filming. Back to that old chestnut eh???

Janet/ Kirsty I too noticed the difference in the tail sets. Completely different on the dogs in the US compared to the UK. ALthough some of the coats were amazing, puts my grooming to shame any day lol!! Must admit I prefer the top knots of the Uk compared to the US. JMPO. Interesting topic, nice to able to have a comparison though, very interesting. <img src='http://www.shihtzuclub.co.uk/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Hi Janet, tail set:- this for us means the position the tail is set on the body, ie, the tail coming off the spine. The tail set can be too low which is usually associated with an upright pelvis, associated with stilted hind movement.

tail carriage:- this means the height of the tail carried on the dog, ie as you said, flat on the back or carried tea-pot. The carriage does not affect the movement, but tail set does.

Hope this helps.

Debbie

Thanks, Debbie! This explains it very well. Tail carriage -- of course! Thanks again!

Thanks, Kirsty! This makes sense to me now. I had just been told a couple of years ago that tail set referred to how the dog carried its tail over its back. Just goes to show how great it is to be able to ask others.

I'm not sure where the tail lying on the back gained acceptance since the standard here talks about carrying the tail high. The grooming is amazing, isn't it? I believe, but could be wrong, that's because there are so many professional handlers here. Greg Larson, who was the blond fellow with the gold-and-white (I believe was the third in line when Stevie was awarded BOB) is especially good. I noticed one Shiddie that was obviously trimmed all around. I know others do some trimming too, but on Greg's dogs, you only notice how good the dogs look, not that they've been cut on. I've never seen him take a dog in the ring that wasn't immaculantly groomed. It takes a lot of work and a lot of skill!

Hooray for a solid black being awarded BOB! It is difficult to see Stevie on certain angles but he did catch my eye. Thanks for the link Rose.
