I must admit Janet, I thought many of the tails at Westminster were much too flat - but didn't want to offend any of our american members! It's a real shame because the shih tzu is all about that beautiful balance. Although I would say that the grooming of the american shih tzu is absolutely amazing - once you can see past the top knot!
My understanding of tail set is where the tail is attached to the body - there are some tails which are too far down the end of the back, which means it comes "out" the back of the body before it comes over - which looks a bit odd (and sometimes it can make the topline look strange).
I may be wrong - perhaps some of our more experienced exhibitors could advise?
Thanks, Kirsty! This makes sense to me now. I had just been told a couple of years ago that tail set referred to how the dog carried its tail over its back. Just goes to show how great it is to be able to ask others.
I'm not sure where the tail lying on the back gained acceptance since the standard here talks about carrying the tail high. The grooming is amazing, isn't it? I believe, but could be wrong, that's because there are so many professional handlers here. Greg Larson, who was the blond fellow with the gold-and-white (I believe was the third in line when Stevie was awarded BOB) is especially good. I noticed one Shiddie that was obviously trimmed all around. I know others do some trimming too, but on Greg's dogs, you only notice how good the dogs look, not that they've been cut on. I've never seen him take a dog in the ring that wasn't immaculantly groomed. It takes a lot of work and a lot of skill!
