Yes they are something to behold !!!!! Must cost a fortune in hair spray, but that's the way they like them. It takes me ages to do a top knot now, god help me if ours were like that. I have heard that in the past people have been specially flown in just to do the top knots.

On a different note, it's great that they can provide such a web service. I wonder how long it will take Crufts to provide such coverage?

To me, the height of the topknots plus the flat tails make the American dogs look very unbalanced.

i had already seen it!!

i loved it !!! i watched it for the handling demos!!!

the tops a a little exagerated!! the grooming on the whole is fantastic!!!!

i think i mentioned somewhere on the board... and without offence meant ..

the american shihtzu has lost a lot of it's charme.. flat tails, long necks, and undersized... and i think that's a shame!!!

but beautiful long fur!!!

I don't think so! Those top knots, no way! also my dog has a correct teapot tail and that wouldn't fit with what they are showing, plus he would be penalised for his coat colour, they don't show solids over there. I am sure those more in the know will correct me if I am wrong, but don't think I have seen a solid..ever? I also wouldn't crate my dog 24-7 as they do, just to grow a coat..poor Oscar, he couldn't cope with that as he loves his runs out...although I can't believe he still finds leaves...! Dx

saying that those Coats where fabulous!!!! but I did love the way each little dog shook itself in the typical shiddie way, just after you have spent ages grooming <img src='http://www.shihtzuclub.co.uk/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

Hi, Deb -- Solid blacks seem very popular right now here in the US. Although we didn't see any in the Westminster video, there's been at least one at every show I've gone to in the last few months. Also, on the discussion boards, they seem to be all the rage right now. At least in theory, the solids shouldn't be penalized here either. You don't see many black masks either, and those who have them say they are a bit harder to finish. Not all breeders here crate their dogs 24/7 to grow coat, but it does seem that the majority do. I think that's a real shame. I was advised by a couple of breeders to start crating my pups at around 5-6 months so their coat wouldn't get all messed up from playing with each other and romping in the yard. I could never have done anything like that and some other breeders told me that they too let their show pups romp around. The two that I'm showing love to play with each other and one in particular absolutely loves to run and dodge. I think the muscle tone they build up by doing this far outweighs the damage done to their coats. After all, it's supposed to be a DOG show, not a GROOMING show. I know that the grooming has an effect, just as with some judges, who is holding the lead has quite an effect.

Janet U

P.S. Saw an interesting post on another board about those topknots. Every now and then, people here in the US have a debate about them. This particular person said that she gave up conformation before of the topknot thing. She is known for having very nice dogs, so it's a real shame. At any rate, it was mentioned that the hairspray, just like the eye stripes that are painted on, are illegal according to AKC regs. and that any exhibitor, regardless of placement, can demand that the judge dismiss all dogs with hairspray and the judge must do so. Now if somebody would just get up the nerve to put it to the test before people start hanging Christmas tree lights on those poor "plumes" and putting stars on top! Oops! Don't tell anyone I said that! It might give them ideas! LOL!
