I would like to thank the committee for the invitation to judge at their championship show, Bill & Trish Gray for their amazing job as stewards in keeping everything running smoothly, and the exhibitors for entering their dogs for my opinion. I was very pleased with many of the dogs shown under me, although I was a bit surprised with what I found in others. As the standard calls for, I was looking for small dogs with good bone and body making it a heavy dog for its size. I was pleased to see dogs that were slightly oblong in shape which is exactly what the standard calls for. Compact is never a word that should be used when describing the shape of a Shih Tzu. On the down side, I did find some rounded mouths which were also narrow. The breed standard does call for a wide jaw with a square muzzle. This rounded jaw impacts on the whole expression and is something that I have not seen for many years. Many people talk about 6 teeth on the bottom jaw between the incisors. This is not mentioned in the standard, but something to aim for to give that width of jaw, but only if it is the correct shape in the first place. Lack of chin also seems to be appearing in some dogs. Please remember, this should be shock-headed with a definite stop. I did find some that lacked this stop which sloped to the back of the skull. This gives a totally incorrect head shape. I did find the level of grooming and presentation extremely good.

Thank you to the committee of the Shih Tzu Club Of South Wales & Western Counties for inviting me to judge their Championship Show, and to Dorothy McIntyre for stewarding for me and keeping the ring running so smoothly. Thank you also to the exhibitors for giving me the honour of judging your dogs, and accepting the placings so sportingly. In general, I found the grooming and presentation to be of a very high standard, but I was concerned to see in some exhibits to be lacking in body and some narrow fronts. Also, we seem to be losing the lovely powerful rear movement, which is to me, one of the main characteristics of our special breed. Temperaments were very good, which is so important.

I would like to thank everyone for the lovely entry, especially when considering it was on a working day at the start of the year. I was also very pleased with the gracious way that my placings were received. I would like to start this critique with a couple of, what I consider, important points. I found the standard of grooming was very high, and I was very impressed with the muscle tone on the majority of the dogs. However, I would hope that when selecting dogs for showing/breeding, all exhibitors would apply the breed standard, as this is a very clear blue print. The shape of the chest is an important aspect to our breed, as this shows as being stated twice in our breed standard. The forequarters should be as straight as possible, consistent with broad chest being well let down and the chest broad and deep I found a number of dogs, which were very narrow in chest. On some, it was difficult to fit 3 fingers between the front legs, let alone my hand. This then followed through to a slab-sided ribcage with very little depth which, when reading the breed standard, is not correct. The Shih Tzu is supposed to be longer between withers and root of tail than height at withers. We should not be aiming for caterpillars, but I did find some dogs that were almost square in appearance, which is certainly not what the standard is calling for. Having said this, I was very pleased with my final line-ups, and in some classes the placings could change on another day. There are some lovely dogs being shown for which I feel the owners can be extremely proud, even if they did not win 1st prize.
