When I look back from where I started 52 years ago, I met a Mr Arnold Leadbitter with his Greenmoss Shih Tzu’s as they live locally, as that was the type I was used to seeing, not many people will remember Mr Leadbitter or in fact met him and his dogs, I now ask myself what has happened to this lovely breed. Whilst I understand that you all can’t have first class exhibits, that would be nice but impossible, but you need depth of quality in any breed for it to succeed, I now think the depth of quality in this breed is at an all-time low.
What do you think is the reason that has caused this problem? Is it bad breeding? Or is it poor rearing? bad handling? Lack of selection of a good stud dog to choose from? Maybe not many good foundation bitch available to start with?
I think to start with would be a seminar on how to breed, run by the breed club to hopefully help in the pursuit to improve the breed in general. It is all well and good having seminars for judges to hopefully understand the concept of good breed type as defined by the standard, when you have difficulty finding these dogs that fit it in the ring.
I am not going to elaborate on the shortcomings of the Shih Tzu it is all there for you to see, but I would hope that you give a little thought as to what can be done to improve this lovely breed.

As always I always do a preamble if I feel there is any problems in a breed, but this is only my opinion, the problems I had today some exhibits are too long cast which spoils the overall balance in profile, tails I think are the biggest problem as there are too many flat tails and now some which are quite high when carried tend to move slightly to the rear rather than over the loin area which in turn extends the length of back on view. The breed is nearly extinct of the typical “distinctly arrogant carriage�? they once had.
But on a brighter note I did not come across over large heads today as in the passed there have been a few that were too large.
