Full Critique for Shih Tzu Club of Scotland 2022

This critique reflects the judge's opinion
based on what they saw on the day of the show.
| Thank you to the Shih Tzu Club of Scotland for inviting me to judge at their 40th Anniversary Championship show, and to Philip Martin and the committee for their wonderful hospitality. Thank you to my stewards Jackie and Ellen for keeping the ring running and in good order. It was a lovely, friendly relaxed show. I have a couple of concerns after judging today’s entry. Many dogs present had attractive heads and expressions but many were lacking a wide, tilted underjaw with good dentition. While some had six teeth, they could not fit in a row in such narrow underjaw’s. This wonderful tilt and broad underjaw lends itself to so much of the typical oriental expression that is an integral part of a Shih Tzu head and expression that is much loved by Shih Tzu owners and breeders. We need to take great care to correct this for the future. My second concern is movement, and whilst many dogs present had balanced movement front and rear, we need good enough angulation to provide the appropriate reach and drive for the breed. Movement that shows a full pad behind with the balanced reach in front. On a positive note, the majority of Shih Tzu present were very typical with the correct outline and balance for the breed. There were some very promising youngsters who, while today may not have been their day, they can only improve with time to body up and finish teething which affects their tail carriage. Patience is needed to wait for correct coats to come through. The adult dogs were presented in wonderful coat. The veterans were a joy as always. All dogs present had the desired temperaments with one or two displaying true arrogance. I was delighted with my main winners who I considered to have all of the desired breed attributes and I will watch many show careers with interest for the future. | 1st | Rossvale Wildest Dream JW | 8 month old. Up to size for his age. Very nice balanced outline, good length of body to height. Large round head. Wide set eyes with dark soft expression. Correct wide underjaw. Excellent length and depth of rib. Strong loin. Well angulated back and front which give nice stride when moving. Well carried tail to complete the picture. |
| 2nd | Daltricia Jack Higgins JW | Grey brindle and white. 7 months. Very pretty head and expression. Correct shaped under jaw with nice tilt. Well-made body for his age. Well angulated. Correct top-line. Tail carriage could be better, he is teething so hopefully this will improve. |

| 1st | Ch. Zeeva Cool Dude | 9 months old dark gold and white. Balanced outline. Very attractive head and expression. Skull needs to broaden which should come with age. Darkest of eye. Lovely tilt to jaw. Very good top line. Tail set could be a little higher but he is still teething. Excellent depth of chest. Good length of rib. Well angulated. A little close behind when moving. Lovely reach in front. Overall, very nice puppy. |

| 1st | Thaisu’s Blinding Light | 14 months solid gold. Excellent overall traditional type, sturdy throughout. Large round masculine head with beautiful expression - Large dark eye, Well placed large nose and correct strong under jaw. Arched neck. Excellent fore chest and depth of rib, rib cage could be a little longer but developing well. Strong loin. Correct top line when moving. Well angulated.Moves with lovely reach and drive. Tail is a little flat when moving. Coat is at an In between stage for his colour but he has excellent coat of correct texture coming through. Strongly considered in the challenge. |

| 1st | Ch. Matsuba King Of Hearts | Gold and white, almost two years. A little over excited today!! Correct balanced outline, correct length to height proportions. Beautiful round head and oriental expression, soft but masculine. Lovely nose placement strong wide under jaw with lovely tilt to jaw. Good length of neck. Excellent top line and tail set, leading to the desired high tail carriage. Excellent length of rib, still developing and could be slightly broader. Strong loin. Correct angulation front and back which leads to positive and free movement. Excellent coat texture. Gives his handler a hard time. Preferred his overall outline and tail set in the challenge, winner of Reserve CC |

Nose while large is a little low set which affects the softness of his expression. Broad under jaw. Excellent fore chest. Well-developed ribcage strong loin. Tail carriage a little flat. Balanced angulation. Lovely temperament. |

| 1st | Ch. Senousi Dressed For It By Fairmere | Three years old solid gold. Excellent overall type with strong sturdy well developed body. Large round masculine head with large dark round eyes which gives a soft appealing expression. Correct shaped jaw. Good length of neck. Excellent top-line with correct Tail set. Excellent fore-chest and excellent length of broad rib. Lovely balanced angulation front and back which gives correct breed movement. Abundant coat of correct texture. Well-deserved DCC and ultimately BOS. In the BIS challenge both females scored on the move. |

Would like stronger forehead but that can still develop. Good fore-chest. Broad rib which could be a little longer. Excellent top-line and tail-set. Good depth of chest. Well angulated and moves with good drive. Excellent coat texture. |

Moves with nice drive. Lovely personality. Will watch with interest |

Not in full coat but correct texture coat coming in. |
